S A Armstrong Limited Headquarters
Scarborough, Ontario

The project was a partial renovation and an addition to an existing single-storey commercial building from the 1950s. The principal division of the program into four sections - administration, engineering, manufacturing and sales - generated the plan and section of the building. In order to avoid general circulation passing through departments, a "double height" hallway extending the entire length of the building forms this neutral space as a fourth wall, and, when viewed from the street, it is the principal facade of the building. This facade is formed into a shallow crescent; the main entrance is at its centre, completing the axis of an adjoining avenue that closes at the site from the north.
