The Savoy is a Victorian theatre the principal asset of which is an acclaimed Grade II listed interior designed by Sir Basil Ionides in 1929. In 1990 the building was partially destroyed by fire and the auditorium gutted. The restoration of the High Art Deco interior is now complete. The restoration posed unique difficulties. Max Fordham and Partners and architects Whitfield Partners developed a design that would bring the levels of comfort, safety and technical performance up to rigorous modern standards without compromising the merit of the Ionides interior.
