The scheme, by David Morley Architects, won a limited competition in 1993 which resulted in the ingenious use of a sophisticated north roof light. North light principles were developed to produce a barrel roof design with half roof light and half solid panel. A series of fabric blinds shade the playing area from direct sunlight and overlaps with small openings to optimise the diffuse light penetration.
