Baltic Flour Mills

BALTIC FLOUR MILLS: INTERNATIONAL GALLERY FOR CONTEMPORARY ARTS

The existing building on the Tyne bankside is to be converted into the UKs largest contemporary art gallery outside London. As such a prominent landmark, the Baltic Flour Mills project rests physically and symbolically at the centre of Gatesheads vision for the rejuvenation of the riverside.

The transformation of the Baltic Flour Mills will consist of hollowing out the existing grain silos leaving only the exterior monolithic walls in place. The gallery spaces will be suspended between these North and South walls which serve to screen that which is contained while becoming screens for projections and other surface installations. Also included in the project is a cinema, educational and administrational facilities and a ground floor cafe. The whole is surmounted by a lightweight autonomous structure comprising of glass rooftop bar and restaurant with panoramic views of Gateshead, Newcastle and beyond.

The competition winning scheme is due to be completed in 1999 and will be a landmark structure for Gateshead.
