UK: Toilets: Toilet Manufacturers & Suppliers
Contemporary toilets are normally made from white vitreous china, and are of three types: Close Coupled Toilets, Back to Wall Toilets, and Wall Hung Toilets. Close Coupled Toilets have a matching vitreous china cistern which rests on the back of the toilet. Back to Wall Toilets are placed back against a hollow panel, with a cistern concealed behind the panel. Wall Hung Toilets, which need steel bracket supports, are fixed directly to the back wall, and cantilever out clear of the floor. This provides easy floor cleaning. All toilets may be dual flush. Victorian reproduction toilets are also available. Leading UK suppliers of toilets are profiled below the panel of sponsored links.
LEADING TOILET MANUFACTURERS & SUPPLIERS
Ideal Standard: Toilets. Ideal Standard is a leading UK manufacturer of bathrom fixtures and fittings, including toilets and cisterns. Ideal Standard toilets and cisterns are designed as parts of complete bathrooms suites, but may be bought separately. The Alto range, designed by Studio Levien, includes a close coupled WC Pan with horizontal outlet, and a close coupled cistern with dual flush valves. This allows options of either 6 or 4 litres of water per flush. The Ideal Standard White range, designed by award-winning architect David Chipperfield, includes a simple and elegant close coupled WC with dual-flush cistern. The Tonic range includes a wall mounted WC which cantilevers clear of the floor. This makes for easier cleaning of the floor around the WC. The website includes a useful Web Site Demonstration; this is a video explaining how to find the products of your choice.
Thomas Crapper: Toilets. Thomas Crapper set up his business in 1861 and became a pioneering Victorian toilet manufacturer, by Royal Appointment to King Edward VII and King George V. Not all his inventions were successful. His self flushing toilet was powered by the action of the seat springing up (under the influence of a strong spring) when the user rose. This often resulted in the user being struck on the bottom by the seat, leading to loss of sales. The business, now based in Stratford-on-Avon produces a range of meticulously reproduced and authentic Victorian style bathroom fittings including toilets. Thomas Crapper produces two models of toilet bowl - both careful reproductions of Victorian originals - the Venerable and the FitzHigham. Both toilets are hand-cast and hand-finished, using high quality vitreous china clay and glazes. In both cases the name is displayed on the front of the rim. This is done using authentically detailed transfers which are fired into the glaze and are smooth to the touch.
Bathstore: Toilets. Founded in Croydon in 1990, Bathstore has become one of the UK's largest retailers of bathroom fittings, including toilets. It operates online, and through more than 170 stores across the UK. The Bathstore range of toilets is organised into three categories: Close Coupled Toilets, Back to Wall Toilets, and Wall Hung Toilets. Close Coupled Toilets have a matching ceramic cistern which fits directly onto the top of the toilet bowl. They can be fitted into any bathroom, directly against the wall. Bathsore offers more than 15 models. Back to Wall Toilets are not combined with a cistern, but rest on the floor and are fitted with their back against a hollow panel or wall, within which a concealed cistern is housed. Wall Hung Toilets are similar to Back to Wall Toilets, but are fixed clear of the ground. This makes floor cleaning easier. Wall Hung Toilets should be fitted using a steel supporting frame, such as the Bathstore S-Frame System. This is particularly important in bathrooms having plasterboard cavity walls.
