Oak Flooring

UK: Oak Flooring: Manufacturers & Suppliers

There are two main types of oak flooring: solid and engineered. Solid oak flooring is made of solid oak boards, usually provided with tongue and groove edges for secure fixing. The upper edges of the boards will have a slight bevel, to provide a trip-free surface, and the under sides of the boards may be grooved to provide greater stability. Engineered oak flooring is of sandwich construction, with a plywood or high density fibreboard core and an oak surface. Engineered oak flooring has the advantage over solid oak flooring that it is more stable, and less prone to shrinkage or warping. Leading UK suppliers of oak flooring are profiled below the panel of sponsored links.

Peak Oak: Oak Flooring. Peak Oak, run from his farm by Adrian Plant and his son Tom, is based in Onecote, near Leek in Staffordshire. Peak Oak specialises in the supply of solid and engineered oak flooring, solid oak skirting, oak ledged doors and wrought ironware. The solid oak flooring is all made frome European oak and comes in eight quality grades, ranging from the lowest barn grade through to the highest quarter sawn grade. The grades vary in the number of knots, fissures, cracks and figuring they contain. The oak flooring planks have tongue and groove edges which are micro-bevelled along their lengths to produce even non-trip joints. Stress grooves are cut into the under side for increased stability and shrinkage resistance. Solid oak flooring boards are supplied in lengths from 500mm up to 3000mm and in widths from 90mm to 210mm. Peak Oak's engineered oak flooring boards have veneer produced from one plank of oak, not made up of small strips.

The Oak Flooring Company. The Oak Flooring Company, based in Exeter, Devon, is a family company specialising in oak products. It is run by qualified forester Martin Truran, who spent six years in Africa gaining experience in hardwood forestry and sawmilling. He set up the Oak Flooring Company to offer customers the best oak available in Europe, hardwood flooring from the tropics, and high quality decking from Brazil. The company supplies oak flooring throughout the UK. Its oak flooring is produced in Germany, with the process from felling to flooring taking two years. The logs are cut and stored in the forest for up to one year. They are then taken to the sawmill in Bavaria where the sawn timber is staked with battens and left in the open air for six to nine months. The oak is then dried in kiln chambers for four weeks until it reaches a moisture content of 9%. These processes produce oak with a smooth uniform colour, which is also more stable and easier to work with.

Kahrs: Engineered Hardwood Flooring. Kahrs is a leading manufacturer of hardwood flooring including engineered oak flooring. Kahrs' UK operation is based in Havant, Hampshire. Kahrs was founded in 1857 by Johan Kahr, who started a small wood turning workshop in Nybro, in the middle of the forests of Smaland in Sweden. Kahrs engineered oak flooring is constructed from plywood, with to which a surface layer of oak (typically 3mm thick), and a bottom layer of spruce veneer are glued. The plywood provides great dimensional stability, and the oak surface layer provides the look of natural hardwood. The engineered oak floor can be re-sanded twice in its life, and can be used with under floor heating. Other hardwood options for the surface layer include: Ash, Beech, Birch, Cherry, European Maple, Hard Maple, Jarrah, Jatoba, Merbau, and Walnut. As well as plain straight planking, Kahrs offers engineered oak flooring in parquet-like designs. Other options include a ship's decking pattern, and distressed, bevelled or brushed hardwood finishes.
