Internal Doors

UK: Internal Doors: Internal Door Manufacturers & Suppliers

The most common types of new internal door are moulded internal doors, flush internal doors, and solid wood internal doors. Moulded internal doors have a solid core of lightweight timber or composite material, to which moulded hardwood skins are applied. Flush internal doors are flat, usually made from hardboard attached to a lightweight timber frame and core. Flush internal doors can be painted, or surfaced with hardwood veneer or wood-effect foil. Solid wood internal doors are normally made of laminated timber (to avoid twisting and warping) with a surface veneer. Leading UK suppliers of internal doors are profiled below the panel of sponsored links.

The first question to ask is whether you want the internal door to be glazed or solid. Consider glazed doors for use between living areas, and between an entry hall and living areas. Their great virtue is that they allow more daylight into all parts of the house, giving a more cheerful feel and saving electricity. Glazed internal doors normally have a wooden frame made up of vertical members known as stiles and horizontal members known as rails. There may be a single sheet of glass, or a mid-rail separating upper and lower sheets of glass. For a traditional look, the areas of glazing may be divided into smaller panes using glazing bars.

Solid internal doors are available in main types: solid wood internal doors, panel effect doors, and flush internal doors.

Most solid wood internal doors are of frame and panel construction. The joints are connected using strong mortise and tenon joints. The wooden panels should be allowed to move freely within grooves in the frame, to allow for expansion. Such doors are available in a wide range of hardwoods, including beech, ash and oak, which may be stained and sealed. They are also available in pine and other softwoods, which may be sealed or painted. For a period property, consider buying re-cycled doors from an architectural salvage supplier. These have more character than a modern door, but check carefully that their joints are in good condition. An alternative to the frame and panel solid wood door is the plank door. This is made up of vertical planks, usually tongue and grooved, with horizontal braces. For greater strength diagonal ledges can be added, or even a full frame. These plank doors have a rustic appearance, and are particularly suitable for cottage-type properties.

Panel effect internal doors may be routed or moulded. The routed doors have decorative grooves, resembling a frame and panel door, cut into the surface. They are made from medium density fibreboard, which may be solid or may have a foam core. Moulded panel effect internal doors have skins made from either glass reinforced polyester or UPVC. The moulded skins have recessed grooves simulating the appearance of a frame and panel door. All these panel effect doors have a somewhat artificial appearance, without either the authenticity of a real frame and panel door, nor with the simple contemporary look of a flush door.

Flush internal doors are the most common type in modern buildings. They are made from a core, with a flat surface on each side and a strong, usually timber, edging. Areas are reinforced to take hinges and door furniture. A very wide range is available, in terms of thickness, weight, quality of construction, and quality of finish. The highest quality flush internal doors have heavy cores, and hardwood veneer finish. The cheapest flush internal doors have lightweight cores (sometimes a paper honeycomb) and hardboard surfaces. If sound insulation is important, a high quality door with a heavy core must be used.
