UK: Carpets: Carpet Manufacturers & Suppliers

Carpets vary in their construction, in their materials, and in their colour and pattern. Cut Pile Tufted Carpets have a smooth shallow texture; they are manufactured in white yarn, and the colours and patterns are then printed on. Unlike tufted carpets, Axminster and Wilton carpets are woven, with any pattern being woven into the fabric. The highest quality material for carpets is wool; it can be dyed easily, and is comfortable to the foot. It may be mixed 80/20 with nylon to improve its wearing characteristics. Polypropylene carpet is dyed during manufacture, and is effectively stain proof. Leading UK suppliers of carpets are profiled below the panel of sponsored links.

Axminster: Carpets. Axminster Carpets manufactures authentic and traditional Axminster Carpets at its factory in the picturesque country town of Axminster in Dorset. The carpets are normally made of 100% wool, using eight pitch looms. They are produced 'from fleece to floor'. The company spins its own yarn, and undertakes its own blending and dyeing. The carpet designs range from neutral colours to high fashion colours, through unusual textures and contemporary patterns, to antique style Axminster carpets in the grand French and Persian traditions. The website presents the product range in three categories: Domestic, Commercial, and Transport. The Domestic range is grouped under the following headings: Plains, Textures, Contemporary Patterns, Patterns Elegance, and Patterns Classic. The Commercial range is used in hotels, foyers, restaurants, casinos, cocktail bars, racecourses, football clubs, and health clubs. The Transportation range is designed to meet the demanding requirements of the airline, marine, and rail industries.

Brintons: Carpets. The Brintons family have been making carpets in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, since 1783. Michael Brinton, the current head of the business, is the sixth generation of the family. The company sells worldwide, and employs about 2,000 people. The company acquired Woodward Grosvenor, manufacturer of carpets and floor coverings, in 2003. It also owns the Wool Classics designer decorator brand, which has a showroom in the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour, London. Notable installations of Brintons carpets include the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas, the Oriana and Aurora cruise liners, and Hong Kong Airport, where Brintons supplied 135,000 square metres of carpet. Brintons manufactures three types of carpet: Axminster, Wilton, and Tufted. In an Axminster gripper weave, cut tufts of yarn are inserted at the point of weaving by means of metal grippers. In a traditional Wilton weave carpet the pile threads run continuously into the carpet and are reaised above the surface of the backing by means of wires or hooks.

Allied Carpets. Allied Carpets is a leading UK carpet retailer, selling online and through 50 stores across the UK. The company was started in the 1950s by Harold Plotnek, who began trading from market stalls in Birmingham. The company expanded rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s, and in 1978 it was bought by the Asda Group. Carpetland bought out the company in December 1993 and chaned their name to Allied Carpets. The brands offered by Allied Carpets include: Quick-Step, Flotex, Pergo, Ulster, Axminster, Victoria Carpets, Brintons, Spacia, Contour, and Ryalux.
