ABOUT BIFOLD DOORS

Bifold doors are multi-leaved folding sliding doors which open using a concertina action. Bifold doors are most commonly used as external patio doors. The leaves may fold either in or out of the room; compared to sliding doors, bifold doors have the advantage that 90% of the opening can be opened to the air, compared to 40% for a sliding door. Bifold doors are available in timber, in aluminium, in aluminium clad timber (which presents a timber surface on the inside) and in UPVC. Smaller timber bifold doors are also available for use as wardrobe cupboard doors. Leading UK suppliers of bifold doors are profiled below the panel of sponsored links.

CHOOSING BIFOLD DOORS

Bifold doors are formed from panels which are hinged together at their vertical edges, so that they can open by folding up in concertina fashion. There are two main applications for bifold doors: as internal doors for wardrobes or cupboards, and as external patio doors.

Internal bifold doors should be considered as an alternative to conventional (bypass) sliding doors. The disadvantage of bifold doors for this purpose is that they do take up some space within the room, as they fold out into the room when opened. They are also mechanically more complicated than conventional sliding doors, and are somewhat more likely to go wrong. This is partly because the weight of each panel is taken only on on vertical edge of the panel, producing significant strain on the fixings. The great advantage of bifold doors, compared to conventional bypass sliding doors, is that they enable the whole wardrobe or cupboard to be opened, providing easy access. This is in contrast to conventional sliding doors, which normally only allow half the wardrobe or cupboard to be opened at one time. The panels of internal bifold doors may be made of solid timber, with sealed or painted finish, or of medium density fibreboard with veneer or painted finish.

External bifold doors are usually fully glazed, although they may also be half-glazed, with solid lower panels. To meet modern building regulations, they are fitted with double glazed units to provide the necessary thermal insulation. The use of low emission glass will reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. The glazing units need to be made of toughened or laminated glass for safety reasons.

External bifold doors can be supplied in wide variety of arrangements, with up to seven panels. One of these panels can be provided as a single door, so that one can enter and leave the room without opening the whole of the bifold door. As with internal bifold doors, their great advantage over conventional sliding doors is that they enable the whole side of the room to the opened, allowing space and air to flow freely between the room and the garden.

The choice of materials for the framing of external bifold doors is timber, aluminium, timber with aluminium facing, and UPVC. UPVC is highly practical, requiring no external painting or treatment. It is also economical. Aluminium is a more durable alternative to UPVC. Timber gives a warmer appearance, within and outside, but it is important to ensure that the timber is of good quality, and is well seasoned. Timber with aluminium facing is expensive, but is a very attractive combination. The external powder-coated aluminium facing requires no painting or maintenance, and is available in a wide range of colours. The internal wood surface provides a warm and comfortable look within the room.
